GOATERY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME:

In order to become less dependent on import of livestock products, the state Government has launched a “Livestock Self Sufficiency Mission 2015”. To achieve the set target, department has distributed goats to small farmers, landless labours free of cost with the intention to help the farmers to enhance their household income. Even unemployed educated youth, were encouraged to take up goat farming to become self employed. Goats were distributed at the ratio of 1 male – 2 female, of breed able age of 8-12 months. Logistic supports were also provided to the beneficiaries.

Reproduction performances of goats in Rorathang, Assam Lingzey and Tingvong Farms have shown significant improvement. Kidding percentage was 50 percent under free grazing condition. However Mangalbarey Goat Farm saw a lowered breeding efficiency and high mortality percentage of kids, which was as high as 68%. Similarly, Rateypani Farm had encountered natural disaster. The very farm was ravaged by strong winds that occurred in South District, killing pregnant does and kids, which forced the goat to be sheltered in open space. This adversely impacted the reproductive performance of surviving stocks. Gradually the farm is rising up to the expectation of the department.

CULLING AND DISPOSAL:

Some of goats were culled on health grounds and excess kids are sold to interested farmers at the price fixed by the department. The sale of farms is deposited in the relevant Account Head. Sometime sale proceed are utilized for purchase of farms’ immediate need.

ACCOMPLISHMENT:

Characterization of Sikkim’s Local Shingharey goats has been successfully conducted in collaboration with ICAR and National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resource Karnal (NBGR). Breed Registration of Shingharey Goat is under consideration of National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resource (NBGR) Karnal, Harayana.
A new germ-plasm viz. “Sikkim Black Goat” has been explored under the technical collaboration of NBGR, ICAR, Karnal, Haryana.
